"This [project] helps the students think in different ways and work with a team
with a similar interest for the same problem to be solved."
great start to the new school year in August! Many classes engaged
students on hands-on projects. One certain class that had an
interesting project towards the beginning of the school year was the
senior EDD class, which is part of the engineering curriculum (Project
Lead the Way).
Around early September, all the students at the high school received several emails for a survey from the EDD class. Many of these students filled out the survey, answering questions for real-life situations or problems. The answers given by the students was used by the EDD class to validate the seriousness of the situation or problem.
When getting started with this project, the EDD students formed their own teams based on similar interests and brainstormed possible real-world problems to find a workable solution to. In order to collect input to see whether the problem they addressed was valid, they used Google Forms to ask about the problem to the high school students to see how much of a hassle the situation was for the students.
The introduction of the iPads at the high school has made it easier for the EDD students to collect the needed information for the project. Since each high school student has an iPad, more data is received from more people. However, this project has been part of the class from before the iPad usage at the high school. About the absence of the iPads in the past, Mr. Benham said, "We would have to be more creative to who we sent forms to. We got a less number of responses because of it." Although the iPads have been helpful for this project, it did not make up a major portion of it. Other technologies were also used, such as computers, CNC machines, 3D printers, and lasers. Depending on the project, some students may have had to build something at offsite locations
such as TDS or GMT.

This project has been very creative for the EDD students, letting them think about real-world problems and trying to find solutions for them. This helps the students think in different ways and work with a team with a similar interest for the same problem to be solved. Among all the projects conducted at the high school this year, this project made full use of the thoughts of the high school students to solve a real-world situation!
